Who was Dafydd Lewis and what is the Dafydd Lewis Trust?
Dafydd Edward Lewis (1866 - 1941) migrated to Australia from Wales in 1896. He first worked in the drapery field and eventually established himself most successfully in business, with a partner Joseph Love. He was a man of bold character and an entrepreneur who believed in hard work and education. When he died in 1941 he left an estate valued at £700,000 to be held in perpetual trust to provide scholarships for full time degree courses at a Victorian University.
Who is eligible for a scholarship?
- Scholarships are available for boys only;
- Scholarship recipients must have attended a Victorian state school or college for at least five consecutive years;
- Applicants should be under 18 years and 6 months on the 1st January in the year their tertiary education is to commence;
- Applicants will need to complete a means test to be eligible. Combined parental gross annual income must be less than $55,660 per annum;
- Students intending to study a university degree offered at any University in Victoria, with the exception of degrees in Arts, Education, Music and Theology.
What does the scholarship provide for?
The scholarship is $18,000 each year for the duration of the scholarship holder's undergraduate degree. Scholarship payments can be used to cover such items as university fees, living allowances, books, equipment and transport.
How many scholarships are awarded each year?
It is expected that the Dafydd Lewis Trust will award approximately 10 scholarships in 2008.
When do scholarship application forms need to be submitted?
Application forms need to be received by 15 December 2007. Interviews will occur during January 2008.
